Gustavo & LA Phil announce 2013-2014 season

Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic today announced the orchestra’s 2013-14 season. The new season, the orchestra's 95th, celebrates both Gustavo's fifth year as LA Phil Music Director and the tenth anniversary of the opening of Walt Disney Concert Hall. Next season, Gustavo and the LA Phil present an array of programming that continues their commitment to classical repertoire, the commissioning of new works, and music education. Highlights of the 2013-14 season include the return of the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela for TchaikovskyFest; Inside Out, a month-long celebration of the tenth anniversary of Walt Disney Concert Hall; the third and final installment of the Mozart/DaPonte Trilogy with Così fan tutte; and Gustavo and the LA Phil’s second North American tour together. Gustavo conducts Youth Orchestra LA (YOLA) students alongside the Los Angeles Philharmonic in a concert on September 29, 2013. The performance marks the culmination of Inside Out, a month-long celebration of Walt Disney Concert Hall's tenth anniversary that features free community concerts around the city. The new season kicks off on September 30, 2013 with Gustavo leading the LA Phil in their Opening Night Concert and Gala, which features Yo-Yo Ma and an installation by video artist and director Netia Jones.

During the 2011-12 season, Gustavo, the LA Phil and the Bolívars embarked upon the Mahler Project, an international collaboration of performance, education, and community outreach across cultures and continents. This season, the Bolívars return to join forces with the LA Phil in TchaikovskyFest – an exploration of Tchaikovsky that includes performances of his symphonies, tone poems, and more. TchaikovskyFest also comprises community and education events, including the annual TAKE A STAND symposium on music education. TchaikovskyFest culminates in a joint performance of the two orchestras on March 2, 2014.

In March 2014, Gustavo and the LA Phil embark on their second tour of North America together. Both Gustavo and the orchestra will make their debuts at Kansas City’s new Helzberg Hall in the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. The tour also sees Gustavo’s debuts at Boston’s Symphony Hall and Montreal’s Grande Salle at Place des Arts.

Next season Gustavo also conducts the LA Phil in 13 weeks of subscription concerts, showcasing classical masterworks and contemporary repertoire that broaden the boundaries of symphonic programming. Gustavo’s performances with the LA Phil also feature appearances by leading soloists that include, among many others, Yefim Bronfman, Emanuel Ax, Lang Lang, Joshua Bell, Hélène Grimaud,Yuja Wang and Leif Ove Andsnes, who continues his Beethoven Journey next season with Gustavo and the orchestra.
