A Decade of Music Education with LA Phil

During the 2016/17 season, Music & Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic  Association celebrate the tenth anniversaries of two of their education initiatives: Youth Orchestra LA (YOLA) and the Nancy and Barry Sanders Composer Fellowship Program (CFP).
Youth Orchestra LA (YOLA)–inspired by Venezuela's El Sistema that nurtured Gustavo–celebrates ten years of initiatives to establish youth orchestra programs in communities throughout Los Angeles. With community partners, the YOLA program provides free instruments, music training, and academic support to students, inspiring them towards vital citizenship, leadership, and agents of change. Learn more about YOLA.
To honor this milestone, 80 YOLA students will embark on a California tour in the fall of 2016 with a program of music by Beethoven, Brahms and Dvorak. The concerts culminate at the historic Paramount Theatre in Oakland, where Gustavo will conduct their final tour performance on October 30.
The Nancy and Barry Sanders Composer Fellowship Program, an innovative two-year immersion that connects high-school-age composers with leading composers and musicians, also celebrates its tenth year in 2017. The current class will present a program to an audience of 4,000 middle and high school students at Walt Disney Concert Hall in early 2017.
