September 30 Opening Night Gala launches Gustavo’s fifth season as LA Phil Music Director and celebrates first decade of the Walt Disney Concert Hall
Gustavo Dudamel celebrates his fifth year as LA Phil Music Director and the first decade of Walt Disney Concert Hall with an Opening Night Gala, featuring guest soloist Yo-Yo Ma. The evening showcases music especially chosen to help tell the story of Walt Disney Concert Hall, from first inspiration (Bach’s Prelude from Cello Suite No. 3), through the iterative design process (Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme), the complexities of its construction (Thomas Adès’s These Premises Are Alarmed) and ensuing financial struggle (the third movement from Mahler’s Symphony No. 9), to the celebration of its opening (the fourth movement from Saint-Saëns’s Symphony No. 3, “Organ”). Gustavo will commence the program with John Cage’s groundbreaking work, 4’ 33”, offering audience members the opportunity to experience the ambient sound of the hall itself. The concert will be enhanced by installations from video artist Netia Jones.
