Gustavo to conduct YOLA at Disney Hall as part of El Sistema symposium
On May 8, Gustavo Dudamel will lead children from the Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles (YOLA) in their first open rehearsal on the stage of Walt Disney Concert Hall, an event that will be the centerpiece of a three-day symposium about YOLA and the El Sistema movement. YOLA is the LA Phil's initiative to establish youth orchestra programs in underserved communities in the Los Angeles area.
To share its learning and support the national El Sistema movement, the LA Phil is partnering with El Sistema USA and the League of American Orchestras to present "Composing Change: YOLA and the El Sistema Movement." The symposium will be attended by leaders in the field of music education and will focus on topics such as helping El Sistema-influenced programs take root beyond the borders of Venezuela and utilizing the already established American "nucleo" of El Sistema-inspired initiatives.
In addition to the open rehearsal with YOLA, the three-day symposium will include round-table discussions and a conversation between Gustavo Dudamel and LA Phil President and CEO Deborah Borda, among other events.
