Gustavo Dudamel returns to Milan's Teatro alla Scala this month to begin rehearsals of Bizet's Carmen. He previously conducted performances of Don Giovanni and La bohème in Milan. In this production he'll work with Tbilisi-born mezzo Anita Rachvelishvili, 25, a graduate of La Scala's Accademia, in the title role. Earlier this year, Dudamel led the LA Philharmonic in performances of Bizet's opera at the Hollywood Bowl in his North American opera debut, having first performed the work last year in Caracas with his Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela and a cast graciously "on loan" from La Scala. The nine-performance run at La Scala begins on October 29 and ends on November 18. Dudamel will also conduct three concerts in the Stagione season in Milan during this period with works of Beethoven and Bruckner.
