Beginning this week, Gustavo and the Los Angeles Philharmonic give the world premiere performances of American composer John Adams’s oratorio The Gospel According to the Other Mary. With performances on May 31 and June 1, 2, and 3, Gustavo leads an international cast of singers, the Los Angeles Master Chorale, and the LA Phil in this contemporary reimagination of the Passion of Jesus. Based on the New Testament stories of Lazarus and the Passion, plus 20th-century Latin American poetry (and other sources), this oratorio for orchestra, chorus, and soloists takes a fresh approach to the combination of materials that Adams pioneered so successfully in El Niño. Libretto by Peter Sellars based on Old and New Testament sources and with texts by Dorothy Day, Louise Erdrich, Primo Levi, Rosario Castellanos, June Jordan, Hildegard von Bingen, and Rubén Darío.
